The Chamba Rumaal | Hanging by a Thread

When one hears of the word ‘rumaal’, they’re likely to think that one is talking about a handkerchief. However, the Chamba Rumaal is no mere handkerchief, but instead, a centuries-old craft form where a piece of cloth is embroidered on both sides using a special technique which replicates the design on both the sides. One of the oldest existing Chamba Rumaals was actually created by Guru Nanak’s sister, Bebe Nanaki, and 500 years later, the Indian Prime Minister carried it as a gift for a G20 meeting in 2022.
